The Montessori method of education represents an ingenious combination of theory, a set of rules, ideas, principles, and methods applied to an event or topic in an attempt to explain it, and practice putting the theory into effect.

An Italian physicain turned educator, Maria Montessori spent many years observing and working with children.  In the process, she built on some of the ideas of others who had worked with children, and she developed and refined her own ideas, materials, and methods.  Starting in the early 1900s and for the next 50 years, she developed an encouraging, stimulating program where children could learn the skills they needed to eventually become responsible, productive, independent, and loving citizens of the world (NAMC, 2007, p.3).

Children at the Montessori School of the Greater Mohawk Valley are encouraged to explore, investigate and fulfill their natural curiosity about the world around them. Under the careful guidance of our experienced teachers, children develop at their own pace and learn that school can be an unending adventure - one that inspires a lifetime of discovery.

What is a Montessori primary classroom like?
A Montessori classroom is an exciting place to be. There are many interesting and beautiful resources for children to work with. There are many interesting books provided that offer a wide assortment of topics. Books on insects, plants, animals, different countries, and history are just a few of the favorites. However, textbooks and workbooks are not the major focus of Montessori education. Instead, children work with many different concrete materials, which help them to learn through an active process. In using these materials, the children may make their own books, draw their own maps or time lines, and develop their own projects. As a result, the classroom is a busy, happy place to be. Since the classroom is well organized, with the intention of making all the materials visible and accessible for the children, the children can find what they need, allowing them to work independently and confidently.
